JANSEN – According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the San Francisco Giants have expressed interest in free agent closer Kenley Jansen. Jansen is now with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Both the manager of the Giants, Gabe Kapler, and the head of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, spent time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, so they are familiar with Jansen from their time there.
Jansen was a player for the Dodgers from 2010 through 2021, during which time he was selected for participation in three All-Star Games. In addition to that, he came in fifth place in voting for National League Cy Young Award in 2017 and assisted the Blue Crew in winning the World Series in 2020.
Before taking over as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018, Kapler worked for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2014 to 2017, when he was promoted to the role of director of player development. Since the year 2020, he has served as the manager of the Giants.
In 2014, Zaidi was given the position of general manager for the Dodgers, and he has held the position of president of baseball operations for the Giants since 2018.
The Atlanta Braves were Jansen’s team for the entirety of the 2022 season. In 64 innings across 54 appearances, he had an earned run average of 3.38, a walk-to-strikeout ratio of 1.05, and 85 strikeouts. In addition to that, he was the National League saves leader with 41.
It is possible that the Giants will deploy Jansen in late-inning circumstances alongside Camilo Doval, who had a very successful season in 2022, if they decide to sign him.
Doval had 51 appearances and threw 67.2 innings, compiling 80 strikeouts and a 2.53 ERA while maintaining a WHIP of 1.24. In what was only his second season playing in the major leagues, he finished with 27 saves.
The Giants concluded the 2022 season with a record of 81-81 and were eliminated from postseason contention for the sixth time in the last six seasons. In the increasingly challenging NL West division, the addition of a closer like Jansen could be beneficial to the team’s chances of competing for a postseason berth.
It is currently unknown which other teams, if any, have expressed interest in acquiring Jansen this winter. On the other hand, if he has a strong season in 2022, he will most certainly be rewarded with a lucrative deal.
